05/06/2026, Chandel: World Environment Day was vibrantly celebrated today at Mantripantha village, bringing together 48 local farmers and rural youth to champion the cause of ecological conservation and sustainable agriculture. The event was organized by ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Chandel. The programme was graced by SS Bemung, Chief of Mantripantha village. Speaking during the technical session, Ts. Leenda Monsang, Subject Matter Specialist (SMS) in Plant Breeding at ICAR-KVK Chandel, highlighted the critical importance of preserving biodiversity and restoring local ecosystems. “Today is not just a day of celebration; it is a day for deep reflection and immediate action,” Monsang stated. She warned that shifting weather patterns and heavy soil stress directly impact agriculture. We cannot grow resilient food if our soil, water, and air are degraded.” To mark the occasion with tangible action, a tree plantation drive was conducted. Ts Leenda described the saplings as a lifeline for the community, essential for holding soil, attracting rain, and purifying the air to secure a greener future for the next generation. Alongside the plantation drive, KVK Chandel also conducted the "Khet Bachao Abhiyaan" (Save Our Fields) campaign. This specialized awareness drive is designed to educate farmers on soil health preservation, eco-friendly farming practices, and the vital need for a balanced approach to nutrient management. Monsang strongly cautioned against the overuse of chemical fertilizers, noting that excess chemicals destroy natural soil fertility and contaminate local water sources. Endorsing the campaign, Village Chief Shri SS Bemung encouraged the gathered youth and farmers, calling them the "true guardians of the land." "We have lived in harmony with nature for generations, but modern pressures often make us forget this balance," Bemung said. "The land is our mother; if we poison it with unbalanced fertilizers, we suffer the consequences in our health and our crop yields." Kh. Kobeng, a progressive farmer from the region, shared his transformative journey regarding the balanced use of fertilizers. Highlighting the impact of institutional support, Kobeng stated, "Through the valuable awareness and agricultural training programs organized by KVK Chandel, I transitioned from conventional practices to a highly scientific and balanced approach to fertilizer application." He further explained that integrating organic manure alongside essential chemical nutrients has systematically rebuilt and enriched his soil's natural structure. According to Kobeng, this advanced knowledge has fundamentally transformed his farming practices, resulting in an exceptionally high yield of robust crops and premium-quality seeds.
